Myth: Only people of mixed-race ancestry develop (Vitiligo) white patchy skin.
Fact: People of all ethnic backgrounds develop Vitiligo. Vitiligo occurs as the result of damaged or destroyed melanocytes. In turn the melanocytes stop producing melanin. Melanin gives skin its natural colour tone.

Myth: Only dark-skinned people will develop Vitiligo.
Fact: Vitiligo affects people of all races. As a result of the contrast in colour Vitiligo is more prominent on people with darker skin tones.

Myth: Only visible skin is affected by Vitiligo due to exposure to the elements.
Fact: White patches caused by Vitiligo tend to occur more commonly in areas exposed to the elements. However, Vitiligo patches can occur on any part of the body. Vitiligo also affects the hair and eyes.

Myth: Vitiligo can result in more serious skin diseases such as leprosy, and albinism.

Myth: Vitiligo is a harmful and life-threatening disease.

Myth: People with Vitiligo should be avoided and not touched or you will catch the disease.

Fact: Vitiligo cannot be transmitted sexually, by touch, by body fluid or in any other way.
